I was the sort of person that didn't really have many friends in school. I liked the people I used to hang around with at the time, but I think it was just because we had something in common, not be cause we were necessarily friends. They are lovely people, but I definitely think there is a reason why we're not really friends. There's not even any tea to spill. I would happily go for a catch up with them over some coffee and cake if they asked!
But there is definitely a reason why I had no hard feelings about moving to a completely different college to my friend group. It was one of the scariest things I have ever done, and at first I thought I was making a huge mistake. I found it really hard to find people with common interests that could potentially be my friend, and everyone seemed to go to college with somebody that they knew, so I felt a little out of place. It wasn't until I attended a meeting for the College Musical that I managed to meet my best friend.
Our college held a meeting every year in the Drama and Performing Arts Department to meet the students who wanted to take part in the musical and to explain how the audition process would work. This year it just so happened to be that the musical was Les Miserables, one of my favourite musicals of all time. Of course I was not missing out on the opportunity to be in this musical. When I went to the theatre, I saw a few people I recognised from my Performing Arts Class, and just sat with them to try and make friends.
After the meeting, they said I could come with them for lunch , which I felt a little nervous about since I wasn't sure if they genuinely wanted to get to know me or if they were just being polite and letting me sit with them.
I was stood in the queue to get some curly fries - healthy I know- and all of a sudden, the guy I have been stood with gets his wallet out to pay, and it is a Legend of Zelda Wallet. I think, this is my chance, and we start binding over all of the video games we have paid.
Since that day, we have done so much together, we went to London twice, saw many shows together, played Mrs Lovett and Sweeney Todd and so much more. We did plan to move to university together, but things changed and in the end, I ended up moving away and he stayed and went to a local university. Again, there is no tea, it was just that circumstances changed and there was another course out there that he wanted to do. But do not worry, we have been hanging out all summer.
We are probably two of the most unlikely people to be best friends, but yet again thanks to musical theatre (and to us both being giant gaming nerds) I was able to meet one of the best people in my life!
