Life is Strange - My Thoughts (Warning: Spoilers)

So I am a little late to this party, but I have started playing through the first Life is Strange game. In this post, I am going to write about my thoughts and the choices that I made throughout the episode. This is the first game in this type of genre that I have played so I am interested to see where my choices are going to go. The only thing I knew about the game before going into it is that it is about two girls and one of them is really into photography. I know most people would just post a let's play on Youtube, but I'm awkward! Also warning for spoilers ahead.

Episode 1: Chrysalis - 6th January 2019

I really love how real this game feels. I mean, no body can turn back time, but climate change is happening! Jokes aside, the people in this game actually feel real and each choice effects how they react to what you say.
So What you have been waiting for, the choices I made in Episode One:

Important Choices:
  • Report Nathan
  • Make fun of Victoria
  • Take a Photo
  • Take the Blame
Decisions:
  • You let Daniel draw your portrait
  • Did not sign the petition
  • Warn Alyssa
  • Wipe clean Kate's board
  • Water Plant
  • Picked up Dana's Pregnancy Test
  • Mess up photos in Victoria's Room
  • Did not draw graffiti
  • Did not save Bird
  • Left Document on the floor
  • Did not read through David's Files
I found it really interesting that you can go back in time and pick a different choice if you want to, it's something I feel that makes this game unique as opposed to other games. I really enjoyed the play through of the first episode.

Since I reported Nathan and Chloe made fun of Max for doing so, I feel like the principle isn't going to do anything about it and that it is only going to anger Nathan more in a later episode. Victoria is also probably going to do something since I messed with the photos in her room and took the picture of her covered in paint. I am interested to see where the whole thing with David is going to go. I thought if I intervened in what was going on between him and Kate then sure, Kate would have been happy, but if something darker was going on behind the scenes then I'd have no evidence, hence the reason I took the photo.

So there you go, there are the thoughts I have of the first episode, let's see what happens next and how much I mess up!

Episode 2: Out of Time - 8th January 2019

So this game took a direction that I really like! Before I go into it I'll go through the choices that I made.

Important Choices:
  • Go to the Police
  • Answer Phone
  • Shoot
  • Kate Dies (Dialogue options: 1. You matter, not just to me, 2. You're my friend, 3. There are Billions of Photos, 4. Your mom)
Decisions:
  • Water Plant
  • Didn't help Alyssa
  • Erase Web Address
  • Not friendly to Taylor
  • Accept Warren's Invitation
  • Don't Write
  • Damage
  • I do
  • Don't help Warren
  • Inform
A lot went down in this episode. One thing that really annoys me though is that no one seems to lock their door in the dormitories! Half the issues in this game would be resolved if people just locked their door! I felt like this episode I needed to be as nice as possible to Kate since I could sort of sense that there would be a suicide attempt coming at some point if I wasn't nice to her. To be honest, I thought she would die off screen if you didn't pick up her phone call in the diner but apparently not. I didn't expect it to be this episode, but yea. I'm also annoyed at myself that I could not save her because I made a really silly decision but oh well.

Somethings going to go down between Max and Nathan though, since he wrecked her room while she was in the shower (this is why we lock doors Max!).

I found the part going around the dump looking for bottles to be a little annoying, but the den that Chloe and Rachel had left there was really cute and I appreciated it being in the game. I also felt a little frustrated at Chloe for getting stuck on the train tracks, like don't play on the train tracks they are dangerous! But whatever.

I feel like it was right to not be able to go back during Kate's suicide scene, it kind of reinforced that in life there are no second chances and there's no going back after you make a very important decision. As awful as it sounds to, I feel like it is going to be right for the story for Kate to be dead. She was a brilliant character, and her spiraling down this path to become suicidal felt scarily real to me. It would have been lovely to save her, but I feel like her death may motivate Max more.

Anyway, bring on episode three!

Episode 3: Chaos Theory - 10th January 2019

This episode left me unsure of what is to come in the next two episodes, mainly due to what happens at the end of this episode. I really enjoyed playing through this episode, but I am not sure that I like the ending. Before we get into it, here are the decisions I made:

Important Choices:

  • Steal the Money
  • Kiss Chloe
  • Side with Chloe
  • Throw in the Parking Lot
  • Give the Gun to Chloe
Decisions:
  • Didn't change grade
  • Didn't remove names
  • Didn't erase message
  • Warn Alyssa
  • Didn't speak to the homeless lady
  • Take photo of Chloe and her Dad
  • Didn't Draw
This episode starts off really interesting with breaking into the school to investigate. There was such a creepy atmosphere in the school at night and the presence that we were not supposed to be here. Kind of saw a repeat of the whole bottle finding thing though with the looking around school to find items, but I felt like there was much more of a purpose to doing this rather than just looking around for random things. One of the best parts about this episode in my opinion is after you've blown the lock off the door and rewound time to unlock the door to Chloe being like "damn, you beat me". Sneaking into the swimming pool was a nice little touch into the game, I feel like this really developed the relationship between Max and Chloe and their characters.

Now, obviously the next morning, the only option was to kiss Chloe, I need my ship to sail okay! I need my gays! And I stole the money in the previous choice as I thought it may come in handy to bribe Frank into giving us some more information about what happened to Rachel Amber. Also, you have to throw the bone into the parking lot, because if you hurt the dog what type of person are you! I really enjoyed the part in the diner trying to get the keys of Frank, and where you can just walk up to him and pour the coffee over his head. It's what I've felt like doing to him since he jumped Max and Chloe in the Junkyard. (I am not a violent person I promise)

My issue with this episode is the whole going back to the past thing, where you save Chloe's Dad. I thought it might just be a flashback that you are able to play through (kind of like a similar sequence in the game Alan Wake), but was obviously proven wrong when Max convinced him to take the bus rather than his car. I do see why it was put in the game, to show what happens when time is meddled with too much, and don't get me wrong, I do find this alternate reality really interesting. The problem with it is that obviously we are going to have to go back and kill Chloe's Dad since Chloe is much worse off in this reality, meaning that a good 20 or so minuets of the game is just erased from the game.

Also, I am not sure if it is intentional for it not to be obvious about most of the minor decisions you can make, but I seem to miss a lot of them in this episode.  I do go all the way around the environments we are given in the game, but I just seem to not notice that you can interact with most of the items other than just saying stuff about them. It's not an issue, I just thought I would bring it uo that i didn't even realise you could make most of the minor decisions. Like Warren's test score, for example, I looked at the test scores and Max made a comment about Warren getting a B-, but didn't realise that you were able to change it.

Overall, this has been my favourite episode to play so far, despite not 100% loving the ending. It is okay, but I feel like revealing that Chloe has been paralysed was just for shock factor and to have a cliffhanger ending for the next episode. To me, personally, I believe it would have been better if Max did go back to this moment and tried to change the past, but found that no matter what she did, Chloe's Dad would always get into the car and die. This way, there would be the message that no matter what you do, some things are meant to happen and are set in time. This would also mean that it wouldn't feel like a lot of game play is meaningless. As a whole, the alternate reality did not ruin this episode for me though.

Episode 4: Dark Room - 13th January 2019

Well, this episode had a real twist. I did not expect the episode to go in the direction it did when first playing it through, but thinking back to it I guess things do make sense if I would have payed attention to them. Here are the decisions I made this episode:

Important Choices:
  • I don't know
  • Accept
  • Stop Warren
  • No one got hurt
  • The Dark Room
Decisions:
  • Did not save bird
  • Took photo and did not destroy bird's nest
  • Used Crowbar
  • Invite Daniel to the End of the World Party
  • Didn't leave Warren a message
  • Enter PUK
  • Warn Alyssa
As discussed in Episode 3, I was not a huge fan of the alternate universe as I felt like everything we were to do in this universe would be erased when we went back to the other reality. It was nice to see Chloe and Max have the same friendship in this universe and harsh to see that her parents were literally spending all of their money on medical bills to keep Chloe alive. Chloe asking you to kill her was a surprise, but I feel like it did not have the impact behind it due to knowing that we would be going back to the other timeline due to the trailer. I feel like this episode was already a little on the long side, and if the whole alternate universe was cut then this episode would be the perfect length. I feel like her being able to change the past too adds a whole load of plot holes too, like if she can go back four years (or however many years she managed to travel back to) to save Chloe's dad, why couldn't Max go back one or two days to save Kate?

Other than that, again this is another great episode! Nathan was the number one suspect while playing this episode, since I didn't feel like Mr Jefferson had anything to do with this and I feel like it was debunked in the last episode that David had no involvement. However I still didn't let Warren beat up Nathan as at this point, in my mind, he was a dangerous mentally ill person, and he may come after Warren for revenge for this.

There was the showdown with Frank (well, kind of show down), which I rewound many times because Chloe kept shooting the dog and you cannot kill the dog! I feel like this allowed much more insight into Frank though, and his relationship with Rachel. It was interesting to see that he genuinely cared for her, and didn't want her to get hurt. Frank is a really caring person who lives with his dog, even if he is a drug dealer... In all seriousness though, I think judgements were made about him too quickly and I believe I have gained a very useful ally in leaving him unharmed.

Something I loved in this episode was going through all of the clues and deciphering where Rachel was. I do love detective stories, and loved the game L.A Noire; although the gameplay was a different style, I did enjoy looking through the clues for Nathan, Frank and David. And then the whole part with the barn and finding the dark room! That was the creepiest part of the game, although an abandoned barn is kind of typical for a murder location. It was really sad seeing Chloe and Max find Rachel's body, just a few steps away from where they used to hang out and have fun together. I felt like the episode would end here but then there was the End of the World party to go to.

Drunk Warren is officially my favourite character of the game. I sort of loved the contrast of the moods with Warren wanting to take a selfie with Max and how this was the best night, where as Max had just found a dead body and now wanted to find the believed murderer.

It didn't click with me that the empty Victoria folder meant that Victoria was the next target for the killer until the party. I did warn her that this person - believed to be Nathan - would be coming after her and that she needed to be careful, but she didn't believe me.

Mr Jefferson was the last person I would expect to be behind the whole thing, and the ending of the episode left me with so many questions. Does he know about Max's power? Is that why he left her alive? Why didn't he kill Max and Chloe since they both knew about the Dark Room? Having time to think about it, I guess there were signs to show that he was behind everything that I just missed because I was too focused on the other suspects in the case.

I did expect Rachel Amber to be dead, but I feel like part of me didn't want her to be dead, for Chloe's sake. This was a really good episode of Life is Strange and I am excited to see what the final episode brings to the table.

Episode 5: Polarized -  16th January 2019

Here we are, the final chapter of the game. I feel like this was very confusing, but nevertheless a great conclusion to the game. Here are the decisions I made:

Important Choices:

  • Sacrifice Arcadia Bay
Decisions:
  • Warn David
  • Tell David the truth
  • Did not help truck driver
  • Help Evan
  • Help Alyssa
  • Help the Fisherman
  • Forgive David
  • Rachel is Dead
  • Leave
It took me a few days to think about this episode and to actually register what I went through. I feel like this was the shortest episode - I'm not sure if this is accurate or it it just felt shorter to me. This episode was a great way to end the story I believe. I can see how you only had the choice of two endings despite the different choices you made throughout the game may be annoying to some people, and can also see how people may dislike it, but personally I like both endings.

The one I chose - as stated above - was sacrificing Arcadia Bay. I thought that Max had spent so much time trying to save Chloe and meddled with time so much to get to a timeline where Max hadn't been captured by Jefferson and Chloe was still alive that to sacrifice her right at the end would be wrong. The people of Arcadia Bay didn't necessarily have to stay in the town, they could have tried to get away or escaped just like Max and Chloe, but apparently nobody did.
It was sad to see the town in a wreck, but I did like the open ending aspect of this story. They drove away from Arcadia Bay, where to? Nobody knows! I'd like to think they went to LA just like Rachel wanted to do and lived out new lives there, or maybe they went to where ever Max's Parents live.

I did go back to watch the second ending, although I totally accept that the cannon ending for my playthrough of Life Is Strange is everyone in Arcadia Bay died. I knew this ending was going to be difficult when I fist saw " Sacrifice Chloe" appear on the screen. It only became more painful when they were talking befre Max rewound time and when they kissed. Then it plays out pretty much like the first episode of the game, Chloe gets shot by Nathan in the bathroom, because of this they discovered the Dark Room and arrested Mr Jefferson. This ending concludes ith Chloe's Funeral.

When speaking to other people, they say that They preferred the ending where Chloe dies, since it is longer and since it offers some closure - Chloe dies and Max moves on. I can appreciate how you may prefer this ending over the other ending, but I can totally see why the other ending is the way it is. There's not much to really see other than the destruction caused by the storm, and obviously Chloe and Max would not be able to stay in Arcadia Bay anymore so they would have to get away. I personally like the open endlessness of this ending. I feel like whichever ending you will prefer will depend on you as a person.

I do wonder what Max would be like mentally after the events of the game, to go through multiple torture sessions from Mr Jefferson, waking up many times in that dark room, being in LA whilst her best friend is about to die from the storm heading to the town, and then the impact o whatever ending you choose. If Chloe is alive, you witnessed your whole town get wiped out, but if she died, then technically none of the events that happened that week would have happened and you would have nobody to explain your feelings too. I think she should maybe see a counsellor after the games events, she must be pretty traumatised by getting through the week she had.

I'm glad that Mr Jefferson got what was coming to him, I allowed David to kill him. After the amount of girls he has already allegedly killed, I had no guilt of leaving him dead. Although I found it super creepy during the stealth section when he was walking around looking for you.

The dream sequence gave me Bioshock Infinite vibes with a mix of Mass Effect 3 (the mission you do for Legion and the Geth, if you've played the game you'll know which one I mean). Normally I absolutely hate stealth sections in games, but I feel like this particular section was not as bad as other stealthy moments in games. I did nearly have a heart attack though when I saw the bottles, and I managed to find them all only to discover that I didn't need to find them all to finish the game.

I now see where the travelling to the past in a photo was going to, making it feel less like a pointless thing in episode 3 and episode 4, so they have been redeemed a little. I think it was clever how she managed to go back to the moment she took the selfie, and made Jefferson come across really creepy during his lesson after knowing about what he did in the dark room. I do believe that Jefferson may have had some knowledge that Max had powers, I don't really know if there is anything there to prove this in the game, but it was just a thought when Max's journal was burned and all her photos destroyed. I believe it was very clever and raised the stakes when she had to actually travel through the storm to get to Warren to be able to go back to a moment where Chloe was alive.

Final Thoughts

Overall, I do believe that Life is Strange is a very good game and I thoroughly enjoyed playing through it over the past week or so (probably longer by the time that this post is uploaded). The characters all felt like they were real people - I expected it to be very cliche with David and Nathan being my first suspects over who was Rachel's killer. Mr Jefferson was never a suspect to me, so it did not make sense that he appeared in the Junk Yard until everything was revealed.

I would be interested to play this game again - to make different choices to see if I experience any different outcomes and to see if there are signs that I missed about Mr Jefferson in the first play through of Life is Strange. I am definitely interested in playing Life is Strange: Before the Storm and Life is Strange 2, but this probably won't be until I am next home from University.
This is a game that I would definitely recommend to play! Although it does look a little dated with the lip sync to the voice actors, the game does have beautiful aesthetics and is still enjoyable.

Credit must be given to Game Guides since I went to their website when looking back at what decisions I made in the game and helped me figure out the minor decisions that I may have walked passed during the game.. You can find their website here.

Have you played Life is Strange? What choices did you make? Do you like this format for blog posts? Are there any other games I should play and review? Let me know, feel free to leave a comment! And I will see you in the next post!

The Musical Theatre Tag

As a musical theatre student and a huge fan of theatre in general, I'm kind of shocked with myself that I have not written more on this blog about musicals. I decided I would give the musical theatre tag a go, since it will be fun to put this information out there, plus I want more variety on this blog, and it seems to have turned into "How many books has Natalie read?".

1.  Plays or musicals?

It would depend on the circumstances. As a performer I would much prefer to be in a musical, and I feel like the majority of the time I would rather go and see a musical than a play, but again, it depends. If I was offered to see Dead Dog in a Suitcase or The Play that Goes Wrong, I would much rather go and see Dead Don in a Suitcase. However, if someone asked me if I'd rather see Mamma Mia or The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Nighttime, I would pick Curious Incident everytime. I have a love for both!

2.  When did you start liking the performing arts?

I've always loved singing and dancing, in fact there was a time where I wanted to be Britney Spears when I grew up! However, I didn't really performing arts as a whole until I was 8, when I watched The Phantom of the Opera with my Mum on DVD (yes, the terrible version with Gerard Butler playing the Phantom...I'm sorry, but I owe my life to that movie). Before then I used to fast forward the songs in Disney Movies because I thought they were boring. I sometimes wonder what my life would be like if I never watched that movie.

3.  Ever been in a musical?

I've been in many Musicals! My favourite though has to be the college production of Les Miserables that I was in in 2015. It was a show that really built my confidence up, I remember our director saying that my Madame Thenardier audition was really good too. Even though I was ensemble for the majority of the show till I played Prouvaire, I enjoyed every minuet of it, and would do anything to do the show again.

4.  What was the first musical you saw on Broadway?

Sadly I have yet to see a Broadway Musical, but the first show I saw on the West End was Wicked in 2015 with Emma Hatton playing Elphaba! It was amazing and I really enjoyed it, even though I had seen the touring production of the show three times before going to the West End. I got seats in the second row though!

5.  If you could be any female character in any musical who would you be?

I'd love to play Nancy from Oliver at some point in my life! A close second though would be the Witch in Into the Woods.

6.  Which male character?

Enjolras in Les Miserables or George Washington in Hamilton.

7.  Favourite musical song to sing in the shower?

Whatever song I need to learn for my classes! But for fun, I like singing Seventeen from Heathers or I'm the Greatest Star from Funny Girl.

8.  Who is your favorite theatre actress?

I love Idina Menzel and Barrett Wilbert Weed!

9.  Actor?

Aaron Tviet and John Partridge.

10.  Favorite film adaptation of a musical?

I love the adaption of Sweeney Todd, even though I do sometimes have issues when stage to film adaptations change or miss out parts of the story or songs, I do think that the changes made worked for the film. The Tim Burton aesthetic also works quite well with the tone and story.

11.  What do you think is most overrated musical?

Mamma Mia, or any jukebox musical to be honest. I feel like it is just lazy writing to just string a bunch of songs together and make them into a story.

12.  What musical made you cry?

Hamilton, I cried the whole way through it.

13.  What musical made you laugh?

The Guy Who Didn't Like Musicals, its honestly one of the funniest thongs I've ever watched, although all of Team Starkid's shows are comedy gold!

14.  Are there any musicals you saw and hated?

I saw the touring version of Dirty Dancing which I wasn't a massive fan of, I give props to the actors and the dancers since they tried their best to work with what they were given, but I really did not like the show itself.

15.  What musical do you want to see as a film?

I would be very interested to see Carrie the Musical done as a movie. I feel like a Carrie Musical shouldn't work, but the sound track is amazing and the little clips of various productions that I have seen on youtube look fantastic! I would also love a Company movie, if there isn't already one, because I feel like it would work really well on screen.

16.  Which musicals are you dying to see?

I would love to see Mean Girls the Musical. I have had the soundtrack on repeat since it came out last year, but honestly I don't think I'll get the chance to see it. My feeling is that it will run on broadway maybe for two or three years and then it will close and will be forgotten about, which is a shame because I love what I have seen of it online.

17.  What is your all time favourite musical?

It changes all of the time, but I feel like my top two that I go back to is Les Miserables and Hamilton, I was lucky to get the opportunity to see them both in June 2018 on the West End.

18.  What would you do if theatre didn’t exist?

I would probably sing and dance randomly, and people would give me random stares because it would look really strange and they wouldn't know what musical theatre is.

TAG! You’re it! Now it’s your turn to answer the questions.

Books I read in 2018

It took me two attempts, but I finally read twenty five books in a year! I am really proud and am looking forward to stepping it up this year to thirty books.  But for now, here is my list of the books I read in 2018 and some of my thoughts about them.

1) We Are Okay by Nina LaCour

I don't really make notes when reading books, so I can honestly say that I cannot remember what happened in this book. But I remember really enjoying it, and it has a beautiful cover!

2) They Both Die at the End by Adam Silvera

Like the first book of the year, I can't remember all of the details of this story (note to self, next year write this as I read the books!) but I really liked this book! It blatantly says what is going to happen to the characters on the cover of the book, but that kind of made me more attached to the characters as I read about what was happening to them. I find the whole concept of a company calling people on the day they are going to die quite scary to be honest. It's like "okay I've got a day at most but can die at any moment.". It's cute that the two main characters stick out their last day together, and there was a part in the book where I thought they were going to live and that they were going to beat the system.

3) The Hate U Give by Angie Thomas

This book was quite eyeopening to me. As a white woman, I have never really realised how privileged I actually am because of the colour of my skin and this book awoke something in me about how people of colour have this issue which isn't necessarily their fault. I really enjoyed this book and am looking forward to watching the film adaption which was released earlier this year.

4) All About Mia by Lisa Williamson

Lisa Williamson is a fantastic writer and I really enjoyed reading The Art of Being Normal last year, so when I saw this book I was expecting to feel a similar way. However I didn't really like this book very much. I feel as though the book was immediately linked to its predecessor due to it being on the front cover and with a very similar art style. Mia was a very unlikable character and I just found the storyline generic. There was nothing particularly special about this book in my opinion.

5) The Exact Opposite of Okay by Laura Steven

A book that I did not expect to enjoy but really surprised me.  It focuses a lot on sexism, with the main character having to cope with the fact that her nudes have been leaked on the internet and how her classmates treat her. She is treated as a lesser human and that she is filthy because she took naked photos, which when experiencing this sort of thing in real life I fell like you don't actually realise how much this kind of thing can impact someone's life. An amazing book to read and among my favourites of the year.

5) Of Fire and Stars by Audrey Coulthurst

Finally, a fantasy story where there is a lesbian romance! This book was very focused on the characters, not a lot happened and there were chapters where the characters were literally just bonding with each other. However I felt like these chapters really connected you to the characters in the story and the struggles they were going to. I loved that although there was a lesbian romance in the story, it was not in the story to be sexy, it felt as though these characters were genuinely in love. The events at the end of the story were engaging and I am excited to see where the next book in the series will take us!

6) Simon vs the Homo Sapiens Agenda by Becky Albertalli

This book felt like I was reading my coming out story. It was written beautifully and I absolutely love how real Simon felt to me as a character. There were even moments where I felt genuinely upset, since I have been though a similar time and knew exactly how Simon felt. This is an amazing story and I would recommend it to any one!

7) A Darker Shade of Magic by V.E. Schwab

Wow, this was possibly one of my favourite reads of the year! I am obsessed with the world building in this book! It gave me major Dr Strange vibes with the travelling between the alternate Londons, I also loved the characters that were presented to us. And get this, we have a male and female lead that are not really romantically involved with eachother! This had been a book that has been on my to read list for years, and I am glad that I have finally read it.

8) Girl Up by Laura Bates

A great book taking a look at feminism that is not just "Women should be better than men". I believe this is the only non-fiction book that I have read this year, but it was a very interesting read! I loved the facts that it presented to me and it also showed some valuable opinions, not to mention the fabulous art style featured through out the book.

9) A Gathering of Shadows by V.E. Schwab

A very good sequel to a very good story! I enjoyed how this book expanded on the characters story lines from the first book in this series and this is a universe that I am absolutely obsessed with! I am conscious of story spoilers, so I will just say that I am very excited to read the third book in the series!

10) Aristotle and Dante Discover the Secrets of the Universe by Benjamin Alire Saenz

A book that has been on my reading list for years, now it is finally on my read list! This story was such a lovely read, I really enjoyed the writing style of Benjamin Alire Saenz too! The characters were so sweet and were well written and had realistic relationships. I feel like the LGBT relationship was not forced into the story too, the characters felt as though they genuinely cared for each other and the relationship was realistic.

11 - 18) The Throne of Glass Series by Sarah J Maas

(The Assassin's Blade, Throne of Glass, Crown of Midnight, Heir of Fire, Queen of Shadows, Empire of Storms, Tower of Dawn)

Back again for another year! I was rereading these books in preparation for Kingdom of Ash, and I have included them all under the same section since I can't really talk about them all individually without spoiling the books. I can say it was interesting reading them in a slightly different order though. Last year, I read them in order of being written, so I read The Assassin's Blade before Queen of Shadows, however this year, I read The Assassin's Blade before the other books and it as weird how much I noticed after reading all of the books. I would recommend to new people to the series should read this in order of when it was written though! I absolutely love this series, it is among my favourite book series'.

19) Fun Home: A Family Tragicomic by Alison Bechdel

The only graphic novel on my reading list this year. I loved the artwork in this book, although there were moments where I suddenly had to close my book when reading it near my mum... It was a lovely story to read and was refreshing to read. Not to mention that this has been made into a Broadway show! (okay I'm a little late to that party....)

20) A Twisted Tale: Once Upon a Dream by Liz Braswell

This book was added to my reading list after speaking to a co-worker about it, we were discussing Disney and this came up in conversation. It was a conversation worth having as I really enjoyed reading this book. It was not the story that I was expecting to read and completely surprised me. It was a refreshing interpretation on the story of Sleeping Beauty and was a lovely quick read too! Maybe I will add more of the Twisted Tale series to my reading list for 2019.

21) Kingdom of Ash by Sarah J Maas

The long awaited conclusion to the Throne of Glass Series and my early 20th Birthday present. This has officially now overtaken Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix as the longest book I have read. This book reminded me of how complex this world was and just how many characters were focused on. I do not want to spoil much of the story, but this book was a satisfying conclusion to the series (although I do wonder what would happen if Sarah did go down a darker path for the ending - I may elaborate on this in the future). It took a long time for me to read this book due to the amount of focus I needed to understand who was where at what point and who I was reading about now ect. I wondered how much of it was actual story and how much of it was filler, but I think this is due to the fact that I am not a fan of two of the characters in the story and when reading their parts of the story I just wanted to get back to the characters that I cared about the most. I feel like this is a common theme with this book when speaking to others about it, but nevertheless, it is absolutely fantastic! Thank you Sarah J Maas!

22) A Court of Frost and Starlight by Sarah J Maas

This book gives me mixed opinions. I like the ACOTAR universe and their previous stories, so I enjoyed reading more into the world. But this book felt very much like filler to keep people quiet for the upcoming release of Kingdom of Ash which has been pushed back many times. I don't know if this is officically a novella or a book, but I think it should be cast as a novella due to the length and the lack of narrative. I do not know how relevant the events in this book will be to the next book in the series, but my thoughts at this point in time is that this was like a "Christmas special" and will not massively impact the events of the next story drastically.

23) Catwoman: SoulStealer by Sarah J Maas

I really loved the take on the DC universe in this book! I have not read any of the previous DC Icons books, I read this because I am a fan of Sarah J Maas' other work. I liked the interpretation of Catwoman, although there were plot conveniences at times and some things did not make sense, it was a pleasure to read! The story was not centered around Batman, which a lot of DC stories I have read do tend to centre around Batman, so it was refreshing to be introduced to a new hero.

24) The Wicked Deep by Shea Ernshaw

A book I thoroughly enjoyed reading this year was The Wicked Deep by Shea Ernshaw. It gave me major Hocus Pocus vibes and was an interesting read. I loved the characters in the story and was invested in each story line; when the twist was revealed I was quite surprised! A great read especially for the spooky season!

25) Animal Farm by George Orwell

The last read of 2018! I only read this for the shortness of it to be honest, but it has been on my to read list for a while anyway. I did enjoy this book though and I feel like it is probably one that everyone should read at some point in their lifetime.

So there you go, my reads of 2018! Did you read any of these books? Are there any on here that you want to read? Let me know! And I will see you next year when I am more organized so can go into more detail about the earlier books on this list!

The New Years Resolution Book Tag - 2019

Welcome back to a post that is probably full of empty promises!! Just like my resolution last year to post on here more often....I am sorry, but at least 2018 does have the most posts of the other years I have had this blog! If you are at all interested, you find the post I did last year if you click here, but for now, here is the New Years Resolution Book Tag for 2019!
1) An author you’d like to read (that you’ve never read before)

I'd like to read some more Shakespeare this year, if Shakespeare counts as an author!

2) A book you’d like to read

I am intrigued to read Hunted by Meagan Spooner. It was a book that I was excited to read back when it first came out, but I had read some pretty bad reviews about it. I received it as a gift for Christmas, so I guess now is the time to find out how good this book really is!

3) A classic you’d like to read

The Picture of Dorian Gray by Oscar Wilde. It is a book I have owned for a while but have never got chance to reading, hopefully this will change by the end of the year! Sorry my gay side is showing!

4) A book you’d like to re-read

Definitely Kingdom of Ash by Sarah J Maas since there is so much that I didn't take in when I did read it, but its a brick so its kind of putting me off reading it at the moment...

5) A book you’ve had for ages and want to read

The Women of Baker Street by Michelle Birkby. The same as last year...I'm sorry I will get round to it eventually!

6) A big book you’d like to read

I'd like to read The Final Empire by Brandon Sanderson. I'm Pretty interested in it and it's lived on my shelf for a while.

7) An author you’ve previously read and want to read more of

I'd love to read more or Marissa Meyre's work, I really enjoyed Cinder when I first read it, and I finally bought Scarlet so I can continue the series!

8) A book you got for Christmas and would like to read

The Surface Breaks by Louise O'Neil. I love fairy tale retellings and the cover of this book is so pretty!

9) A series you want to read (start and finish)
I don't actually have a new series on the agenda at the moment, but maybe I will find one later into 2019 that I fancy reading. I think because the majority of last year was reading a series I'm kind of looking for stand alone books or books that have one or two sequels, nothing more than that at the moment though. It's also because with university taking up so much of my time it takes me long enough to read one book anyway.

10) A series you want to finish (that you’ve already started)

The Darkest Minds Series by Alexander Bracken, the first book was my last read of 2017, but honestly I have forgotten what has happened since so I will probably have to re-read the first one before reading the other books.

11) Do you set reading goals? If so, how many books do you want to read in 2019?
I managed to reach 25 books in 2018, so this year we are stepping it up to 30 books.

12) Any other reading goals?
I would like to try adding a few more non-fiction books to my collection.

So here are the goals I have set for 2019, I am still just working on my reading list for 2018 where I give my thoughts on each book I managed to read in 2018. I hope you enjoyed reading this post and here is my reading list from 2017 if you are interested while you wait for my next post.
